More Birthday Fun!

On Friday the twins got a package in the mail. For whatever reason I did not let the kids open it that day. I think they were napping at the time. Then we had company and a big outting for dinner. The weekend was full of snotty noses as they both had a cold and I can't exactly explain what happened Monday and Tuesday because I simply don't remember. So on wednesday I noticed the package was still on the kitchen counter. I told the twins they had some mail and they got real excited! I let them open it. It was a gift for the whole family from our favorite Duo in NYC. Plastic straws. Four of them. For the whole family. Not just any plastic straw. But the kind this is all twirly, whirly and fun. I let the kinds play with theirs. I took photos of course.

I do especially like this photo of Tom because you can see his little dimple on the right side of his cheek. It's hard to capture on camera these days. He never smiles that much for me when I'm holding the camera!

The kids even picked out colors for Mom and Dad. Green for Paul, orange for me. It wasn't until Paul got home that I found out there was something special about these straws. Tom and Abby picked up the green straw for Dad and ran to him with it. He looks at it and instantly says, "oh, it has my name on it. And this one says T - O - M for Tom and A - B - B - Y for Abby!" Then it clicked. The straws have our names on them! I was looking at them all afternoon, taking photos and video...and didn't notice. In fact those pics you see up above were snapped before Paul came home. How OBVIOUS is that???!!! What's wrong with me???!!!

Thank you again, Nat, John, Anna, and Johnny!

Adjusting to the New Car

Tom tells me today, "I don't think those other kids are coming back with your old car, mom." Well, he's right. I'm not giving any refunds, so they better not come back! The twins are enjoying the new vehicle. Everytime we step out into the garage they say "oh look mommy, you have a new car!" like it's the first time they saw it, EVERY TIME!

Last night I went shopping without the twins. This doesn't happen as often as you think. So they were a little upset when I left. They heard the garage door open when I got home though, so as I was getting out of the car, Tom opened the door to the house and says, "Oh, good job mom! I knew you could come home!"

And now, a random picture. I took this photo last week. This is a typical find in the twins room when I go to collect them in the morning.

It's Good to be Green!

Settle down folks, I'm not actually green.

But my NEW car is! Ok, my car is not actually green either, it's grey.

I guess it does have a little bit of green on it afterall....

But it is fuel efficient. I got a Hybrid yesterday! A brand new 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. It's a bit smaller than my old car, which will hopefully sell today (fingers crossed) but if i learn to drive it right I could actually get up to 40mpg or more!!! This of course is not advertised fuel economy data from Ford (average 32mpg for my car), but I've been doing my research and with some double brake taps here, a little coasting in neutral there...I can run on 100% electric for miles!!! It's a whole new driving style. Of course they also recommend not driving above 55mph and avoiding freeways at all cost. But who wants to drive under 40mph all the time?

*****UPDATE******* 8 PM
My car sold today! Sight unseen. This fellow travelled nearly 3 hours to purchase it this evening. He got a fair deal and I got more (much more) than I would have expected at trade in with the dealer. Tom on the other hand did not think this was so fair. As the buyer drove out of our driveway in HIS car Tom asks "is he coming back?" I said, "no, mommy has a new car now" and he burst into inconsolable tears for about 10 minutes. Then we went and had milkshakes for dinner and all was right in the world again. I think he likes the new car now. Wait till I find some Disney station on my new car satellite radio for him!

Early Birthday Express

We received a very pleasant surprise in the mail today. UPS dropped off a package at our front door and lo and behold, it was addressed to Tom and Abby! It's that time of year again. Late September brings surprises at the door because the twins' birthday is fast approaching. The twins were so excited to see the package addressed to themselves, they HAD to open it right away. Johnny and Anna picked most excellent gifts for the twins to enjoy. A BIG thank you to our favorite twins in NYC.

They waste no time tearing into the packages straight away:

Tom gets a close look at the gift Abby opened:

Here is Abby, showing off her most excellent present opening skills with the finished product!

And Tom counting with his new puzzle:

Tom and Abby were singing, "Thank you! thank you!" but it sounds more like "sank you! sank you!" while I had the camera off of course. So as soon as I started to record them and asked Tom to say thank you again, I get a big fat, "huh?"

And perhaps the funniest portion of events caught on tape. Tom was inspecting his Thomas the Tank Engine drawing kit after he opened it and I caught him trying to shake it up to see what's inside. Watch him closely, towards the end of the clip as he shakes the box. Kids are so funny!

Target Anonymous

Yup! I'm pretty sure I'm addicted. I probably visit Target once, perhaps twice daily. I'm not sure why I can't buy my deoderant and fruit snacks somewhere else, but it's the truth. It's probably an unhealthy relationship we have. Unhealthy for Paul's bank acccount that is. And perhaps unhealthy that my children think this is normal. They learned what the Target parkinglot looked like over a year ago. I thought it was cute, now I'm a little embarassed.

I was at Target on Sunday night, with the whole family I might add. We had an emergency run for Fruit Snacks and because we were right across the street at Chipotle, I figured it was practically on the way home and we should just run in and grab what we need. Of course that didn't happen. We did get the fruit snacks but we had to peruse the toy aisle because it's oh so fun to tease Tom and Abby with all the toys the could have. And of course an extra DVD hopped into the cart. We escaped with almost just what we came for.

Today I was childless for a couple hours, so where did I go? Target of course. I had some returns from some careless shopping I did in the last couple weeks and of course I found my self like a kid in a candy store browsing home goods, hair products and pajamas. And oh, the dollar spot. Have you all seen the dollar spot? It's perhaps the most amazing part of the whole Target experience. I find myself thinking, how could they sell this for just one dollar? And then when Tom and Abby proceed to pull the toys apart in the coming weeks, I learn why they sell it for just a dollar. Today I came away with chip clips. You can never have enough chip clips.

In non-Target news this morning Tom, Abby and I had our lunch al fresco this afternoon. Tom really, really, really wanted to ride his tricycle when we got home from preschool so I forced him indoors for 10 minutes while I whipped up some lunch for all three of us to eat outside. It is easier to do when the 36 pound preschooler is not bawling attached to one of my legs as I scoot across the kitchen, mopping up yesterday's crumbs with his bottom. But I digress. After lunch was finished Tom happily played in the corner watching daddy's bike chain go around and around as he turned the pedal. Abby was still eating and Tom says, "Abby! Abby! Abby! Come play with me! I want Abby to come play with me! Please, Abby, will you come play now???" And with a sigh and a look out of the corner of her big blue eyes "*sigh* alright Tom, I'm coming, alright Tom *sigh*" Too hilarious for words really. Where was that video camera?

It's Going to Be a Girl!

And there she is folks! 35 weeks pregnant. Today was THE day of THE baby shower of all baby showers! A good time was had by all. Even though I forced everyone to pose for photos, play games and do arts and crafts. Can we say control freak?

My lovely centerpiece on one of the tables:

Ah, and my masterpiece. My party favors. I think I orderd them six weeks ago. Personalized M&M's! I am so proud.

And the cutest most functional diaper cake I've ever seen. I've seen a lot of diaper cakes, but never adorned with other useful items. Awesome!

Now we can't wait to meet baby! So hurry up and get here already!

Bye Bye Diapers!

I'm throwing a baby shower tomorrow. Baby showers always involve games. I love games! I decided to play a game, where I needed to use a baby diaper. Well, what's cuter than a newborn size baby diaper? So I bought one package, took one out and nearly cried. OMG! How could have Tom and Abby ever fit into those? Abby wore newborn diapers for 11 weeks (no that's not a typo) ELEVEN weeks! (Tom wore them for just two weeks) So below is a photo. The twins are mostly out of diapers now, but they still wear them when they sleep.

On the left we have Abby's current size 5. On the right is Tom's current size 6.

And in the middle, the newborn diaper. Makes me want another baby...almost, just for a split second. I think I'll just hold Jenn and Franco's newborn baby next month to get that out of my system!

I can't believe the twins will be 3 years old next month! Where did the time go?

Big news on our block. We washed trikes today!

Tom insisted on rolling around on the wet sidewalk. He likes to pretend to fall. I think he's going to be a stunt man. On to more pics:

You'll notice they each have their own hose. That hose splitter was the best $10 I spent this summer. Worth every cent! Not to mention the extra hose as well.

Tom mentioned that daddy's bike looks different than their trikes. I said, "Yes, daddy's bike has two wheels and yours have three." Abby takes a minute to walk around her bike and she looks at it from the back and says, "but I have two wheels right here!" (the two matching ones in the back. Can't put anything by her!

In other news, the matching shirts in the photos are from our very first FIELD TRIP today!!! We went to Funtastic Playcenter and it was a blast. I had to spring into action and save a wandering 2 year old as he escaped from the play area and out the front door!! 40 parents in the room and I'm the only one that noticed. I'm happy to report little boy was reunited with mama.

Kids Say the Darndest Things!

Some telford-twin-isms.

On our way home from gymnastics class the twins were tickled by something I said and they burst out with, "You're crapping me up!"

This evening I gave Tom a scrap of paper and a paper hole punch, after some hard work he says, "I'm very important, I'm doing a GREAT job!"

After Monday's nap Tom was playing with a toy figurine and he says "Pee Pee Bear!" I did a double take and realized, he was talking about Winnie the Pooh Bear.

Would You Like Some Toe Jam With That Nap?

When the twins go down for their nap, I have to sit in their room until they fall asleep. This generally takes up to 20 minutes, sometimes more, sometimes less. I usually pretend my eyes are closed and simply ignore them because they fall asleep faster when mom is boring! They do some interesting things to keep from sleeping sometimes. For example, today, Tom laid flat on his back, knees up and bent with one leg crossed of the next. Then he licked his index finger, rubbed it between his big toe and second toe. Then he licked the same finger again and repeated the process until he had rubbed his wet finger between all his toes on both feet. And I just sat and watched. Ew. Kids are funny.

In other news Abby has picked up a stutter. It seems to be harmless and after I armed myself with pages and pages of internet truths about this subject I have come to the conclusion, although frustrating for her and I, the stuttering is probably harmless and will stop by the time she's 5. Did I just say FIVE?! Yes, it can continue for 2 more years, and it's only just begun. I have alerted her preschool teachers and they also said this type of stutter is common when 3 year olds start a new preschool. So for now, we'll just have to bear with her as she stutters. It's cute in a way, but sometimes I just want her to spit it out already! Instead I will smile, kneel down to her level and look her in the eye as I just wait for her to get her thoughts formed into words. And there are a lot of thoughts a 3 year old can have in one day!

Wrapped in Plastic

I thought you would find this as amusing or more than me. It's a shower glove. This is what the home health company provided to me to cover my PICC line IV while I shower. Normally I take a piece of plastic and just cover the site. It's a pain, yes, but at least I have two naked hands in the shower! Just for kicks try washing your hair with rubber gloves on. Yeah, it's something like that. And not only that, but your hand doesn't get clean in the process.

In other news, I was working on a puzzle for the twins last night. I thought it would be fun to introduce the 50 states and capitals to them. As I was browsing the dollar spot at Target I found a map of the united states as a puzzle. My sister in law found the same puzzle for the twins, so now we have two, which makes the puzzle twice as fun with 100 pieces jumbled together on the floor. The interesting thing about this map/puzzle is that you have to know where the states go to put it back together. There are no state lines on the puzzle base, so you really have to know your stuff! Not exactly 3 year old education level, or 31 year old education level at that! As I was puzzled by the puzzle Tom looks at me and says "Mommy, are you happy?" and I said, "yes, Tom, I'm happy, I'm just trying to get your puzzle back together." He replies, "oh, is that why you look so cross?" I couldn't help but laugh. Who says that???!!!

In other news, I came out of my room after said shower mentioned above today to find the kids perplexingly quiet at the kitchen table. Tom runs toward me with this face like "I know I shouldn't be doing that mom, but it was so much fun!" kind of look. So, as I brush away the dark crumbs from his mouth I ask, "did you help yourself to a snack? What did you have?" He is so proud of himself and says "We had a mommy cookie!" Apparently while I was blissfully showering with my body half wrapped in plastic I forgot to lock the pantry. They broke in, opened my box of oreos (aka "mommy cookie") and each had one. At least they had the sense to eat at the kitchen table. So, what did you eat at 9AM this morning?

Success at Preschool!

We had another successful day at preschool. I dropped the twins off and they immediately ran for the trains and tracks set out on the floor. I had to beg for a hug goodbye from each of them. When I picked them up I asked if they had a good time. It's hard to get reliable information from two 3 year olds so we play guessing games on the way home to figure out what happened today at preschool. First I asked about their art project. They had a blue piece of construction paper fitted with white cotton balls and it said "A Cloudy Day" on top.

So I started to ask the twins about clouds. "What do clouds do?" I ask. Tom says, "They blow that hats off!" Hmmmm, interesting thought. So I asked, "Did you read any books today? What were they about" Tom continues "The wind blowed his hat off!" Ah, so they read a book about windy weather and clouds! They are learning about seasons this month. Tuesday was all about the sunshine and today must have been about wind and clouds. As I was putting Abby in the car she says "The sky is blue today so the birds can live in it!" I like how everything/everyone has a place to "live" in their heads.

So as we continued our drive I started to ask "Do you remember the names of all the kids in your class?" Unfortunately, I don't know all the names, so this makes for some more fun guessing games. I named off about 7 children, and I know there are 5 more! Abby says to me, "maybe you can look them up online when we get home." Ah....the internets, holds the answers for all!

Learning to Write!

Tom and Abby are very good with recognizing letters, especially the letters of their names. They are also very eager to learn new things. Yesterday I asked them if they wanted to learn how to draw the letter A and the letter T. Of course they were up for the challenge. It turns out the letter A is quite daunting, but Tom caught on to the letter T straight away! And of course, I filmed him.

End of Summer BBQ

We went to a wonderful BBQ yesterday and the twins had a BLAST! And so did I. Thanks to Paul S for opening his home and inviting us all over. Thanks to Andy and Laura for throwing the shin dig. We had so much fun, but I have to say, i was pretty wiped out and useless this morning. All that partying with IV antibiotics makes for a sleepy Tara.

Tom and Abby really enjoyed all the kids in attendance. And they LOVED the palm tree! I hope it survived after all those munchkins jumped on it!

I think they really enjoyed star gazing too. Little did they know, the stars actually come out at night! They go to bed so early, they're never outside when it's dark. But Hannah busted out her astrology knowledge and Tom and Abby are STILL talking about it today! And of course the kiddie pool was big hit. Even though it didn't last too long. Tom and Abby came to me when they were done swimming and I tried to convince them to keep their suits on, but they said, "I really really really need to wear my clothes." Creatures of habit.
